We often complain about getting stuck in traffic and how it can be such a waste of time. In this fast-paced world, there is always some place we need to get to instead of staying cooped up in a small compartment.
Sitting in a car for minutes can easily feel like hours, right? But instead of wasting your time stressing and fretting over the congestion, why not put your time to better use by fortifying your yoga practice?
While the small, limited space is not exactly an ideal place to perform yoga, it presents a great opportunity to incorporate your yoga practice into your daily routine.
So if you have been dealing with the general lack of time, this may just be the perfect win-win solution for you. It can certainly take your mind off the traffic and start your day with a healthier, calmer mindset.
Here are some great tips on how you can effectively reclaim your “me-time’ inside your car and make it more meaningful:
Get A Grip
You may not be fully aware of it, but it actually takes a considerable amount of energy to control the steering wheel. Constant clutching can damage the wrist as well as aggravate the sense of stress. You can be able to provide simple relief by shaking both hands for a couple of minutes. Another great idea is to clench and unclench your hands into tight fists for several minutes in order to help relax the arms. Just make sure that your free hand stays on the steering wheel at all times.
Strengthen Your Core
Whether you are walking or sitting, you basically draw strength from your core or abdominal area. Your core is an integral component for overall well-being, hence it is important that you take time to strengthen it. While sitting in your car, slowly flex your abdominal muscles but make sure to consciously relax your shoulders and the rest of your upper body.
Maintain Good Posture
Posture and the way you carry yourself actually reveals so much about you. Good posture can help exude confidence, a sense of calm and centeredness. If you are not feeling exceptionally calm inside the car, slowly inhale deep, big breaths, lifting your chest as you slowly roll your shoulder blades back and forth. Slowly exhale breath in a controlled manner and perform this exercise for 3 to 5 repetitions.
Practice The Virtue Of Patience
Instead of constantly stressing and maneuvering your way to beating the traffic, strive to maintain calmness. Think about it, when you are stuck in a traffic jam, there is nothing you can do but wait.
No amount of fretting and worrying will help you so might as well divert it into a more positive emotion.
As you start to feel your frustration welling up, take long and calming breaths, through your solar plexus. Lengthen your body as you exhale in order to effectively induce a relaxation response.
You see it is possible to incorporate yoga practice into day to day routines. Start making positive changes in your day by performing yoga while in the car.
